The short version

How palm reading works

In palm reading you look at three things: the major lines (heart, head, life and fate), the mounts — the fleshy pads below each finger and around the thumb — and the overall shape of your hand. Each one describes a different side of you, from how you love to how you think and where you are headed.

Palmists usually read both hands. Your non-dominant hand shows the potential you were born with; your dominant hand shows what you have done with it. Differences between the two are often the most interesting part of a reading.

Palm lines meaning

The major lines on your palm

Find each line on your own hand using the chart, then match what you see.

Heart line

Where: Runs across the top of the palm, just below the fingers, from the little-finger edge towards the index or middle finger.

What it shows: Emotions, love and how you connect with people.

Ends under the index finger
Idealistic in love; you want a partner you can admire.
Ends under the middle finger
Practical about love; you show care through actions rather than words.
Long and curved
Openly expressive, warm and emotionally generous.
Straight and short
Private with feelings; slow to trust, loyal once you do.
Broken or chained
Emotional turning points — relationships that changed you.

Head line

Where: Starts between the thumb and index finger (often touching the life line) and runs across the middle of the palm.

What it shows: Thinking style, learning and decision-making.

Long and straight
Logical, focused, thorough — you like a plan.
Curved or sloping down
Creative and imaginative; you think in pictures and ideas.
Short
Quick, decisive thinker who prefers action over analysis.
Separated from the life line
Independent and adventurous; you went your own way early.
Wavy
A restless mind that juggles many interests at once.

Life line

Where: Arcs around the base of the thumb, from the edge of the palm down towards the wrist.

What it shows: Vitality, energy and major life changes — not lifespan.

Long and deep
Steady energy and resilience; you recover well from setbacks.
Wide curve into the palm
Enthusiastic and physically energetic.
Close to the thumb
You recharge in quiet; protect your energy.
Broken
A major change of direction — a move, a new chapter, a fresh start.
Faint
Sensitive energy; routines and rest matter more for you.

Fate line

Where: Runs vertically up the centre of the palm from the wrist towards the middle finger. Not everyone has one.

What it shows: Career, purpose and how strongly outside forces shape your path.

Deep and unbroken
A clear sense of direction, often from an early age.
Starts at the life line
A self-made path; you built your direction yourself.
Starts at the base of the thumb
Family or close people strongly shaped your path.
Breaks or shifts sideways
Career changes — reinvention is part of your story.
Missing or faint
A free spirit who follows interest rather than a fixed plan.

Sun line

Where: A shorter vertical line under the ring finger, also called the Apollo line. Often faint or absent.

What it shows: Creativity, recognition and joy in what you do.

Clear sun line
Creative talent and a knack for being noticed for your work.
Several short lines
Many creative interests rather than a single focus.

The mounts

The mounts of the hand

Mounts are the raised pads of your palm. A full, firm mount is read as a strong trait; a flat one as a quieter one.

Mount of Jupiter

Below the index finger

Ambition, leadership and confidence. A full mount is read as natural authority.

Mount of Saturn

Below the middle finger

Responsibility, patience and wisdom. Prominent in serious, dependable people.

Mount of Apollo (Sun)

Below the ring finger

Creativity, charm and appreciation of beauty.

Mount of Mercury

Below the little finger

Communication, wit and business sense.

Mount of Venus

Base of the thumb

Love, warmth and sensuality — the energy you bring to relationships.

Mount of Luna (Moon)

Outer edge, above the wrist

Imagination, intuition and inner emotional life.

Hand shapes

What your hand shape says

Compare your palm length (wrist to the base of the fingers) with your finger length to find your element.

Earth hand

Square palm, short fingers

Grounded, practical, reliable. You trust what you can see and build things that last.

Air hand

Square palm, long fingers

Curious, communicative, intellectual. You live in ideas and conversation.

Fire hand

Long palm, short fingers

Energetic, bold, passionate. You act on instinct and inspire others.

Water hand

Long palm, long fingers

Intuitive, sensitive, creative. You feel deeply and read people well.

Step by step

How to read your own palm

  1. 1

    Choose your hand

Start with your dominant hand (what you have made of your life), then compare it with your other hand (your natural potential).

  2. 2

    Find good light

Hold your palm flat under soft, even light. Cup it slightly — the creases become much easier to see.

  3. 3

    Identify your hand shape

Compare the length of your palm with the length of your fingers to find your element: earth, air, fire or water.

  4. 4

    Read the heart line

Find the top horizontal line under your fingers and note where it ends and how curved it is.

  5. 5

    Read the head line

Find the line below it across the middle of the palm. Is it straight or sloping, long or short?

  6. 6

    Read the life line

Trace the curve around your thumb. Notice its depth and any breaks — remember, it is about energy, not lifespan.

  7. 7

    Look for the fate line

Check for a vertical line up the centre towards the middle finger. If it is faint or missing, that is common.

  8. 8

    Put it together

No single line tells the story. Read the lines together with your hand shape and mounts for the full picture.

AI palm reading

Let AI read your palm lines

Palmistry and aura reading come from the same idea: that your personality and energy leave visible traces. Your palm lines describe the patterns you carry; your aura colour describes the energy you give off right now.

Our palm scan brings the two together. Take a photo of your open palm: AI looks at what is really there — the length, curve and depth of your heart, head, life and fate lines, breaks and forks, and your hand shape. Your reading interprets those features using classical palmistry and connects them with your aura and a short intuitive quiz.

The scan and preview are free. The full written palm and aura reading is an optional one-time upgrade. Your palm photo is not stored — only the description of your lines.

Questions

Palm reading FAQ

Which hand do you read in palm reading?

Most palmists read both. Your non-dominant hand is said to show your natural potential — the traits you were born with — while your dominant hand shows how you have used and developed them. If you only read one, start with your dominant hand.

What are the four main lines on your palm?

The heart line (emotions and relationships), the head line (thinking and learning style), the life line (vitality and major life changes) and the fate line (career and life direction). Not everyone has a clear fate line — that is normal.

Does a short life line mean a short life?

No. This is the most common palm reading myth. In palmistry the life line describes vitality, energy and big life changes — not how long you will live. A short or broken life line is usually read as a period of change or a fresh start.

How does the AI palm reading work?

You photograph your open palm with your phone. An AI vision model describes what is actually visible — the length, shape and depth of your heart, head, life and fate lines, any breaks or forks, and your hand shape. Your reading then interprets those real features using classical palmistry, together with your aura reading. Your palm photo is not stored; only the description of your lines is kept with your reading.

Is palm reading accurate?

Palm reading is a centuries-old tradition, not a science — there is no evidence that palm lines predict the future. Many people use it the way they use astrology or tarot: as a prompt for self-reflection about their strengths, relationships and choices.

Can the lines on your palm change?

Yes. The major creases stay largely the same through adult life, but the finer lines can deepen, fade or appear over the years. Palmists read this as your path shifting with the choices you make.

What does an M on your palm mean?

When the heart, head, life and fate lines together form a clear letter M, palmistry traditionally reads it as a sign of strong intuition, good judgment of people and an entrepreneurial streak. It is a fun feature, not a rare one — many palms show it.

What if I don't have a fate line?

Many people have a faint, broken or missing fate line. It is usually read as someone who forges their own path rather than following a fixed plan — not as bad luck.

Can I get a free palm reading online?

Yes — this guide walks you through reading your own palm for free. For a personal reading, take a photo of your palm with our scanner: AI examines your heart, head, life and fate lines and your hand shape, and combines them with a short quiz into your personal palm and aura reading. The scan and preview are free with no app and no sign-up; the full written reading is an optional one-time upgrade, never a subscription.
